Christmas is approaching fast. I love everything about the season- holiday tunes, the crackling of a fire in the fireplace, Christmas movies on TV, the smells of cookies baking and Christmas decor everywhere you turn.
Every year I love doing some of my shopping in downtown Conway. From the boutiques, to the antiques, I can usually find a few gifts for family. My favorite place to grab lunch is hands- down Cross Creek Sandwich Shop inside Jenifer's Antiques. On a cold day, I opt for the soup of the day (never had one I didn't love) and sandwich combo. And then there are the cookies, pies, and brownies that somehow end up on my plate. As I left the shop last week, I couldn't help but notice a red truck parked out front, same as the Cross Creek logo. It reminded me of an ornament, plucked straight off a Christmas tree.
I chatted with Chris Jennings, owner of Cross Creek Sandwich Shop, about the truck, Christmas at Cross Creek and more!
Homeward: How did the logo of the truck come about?
Chris: I've always loved antiques and old red trucks. When we were updating our logo several years ago, I decided to use an old red truck with hope of owning one someday. An old truck seemed to go with the feel of Cross Creek and Jenifer's Antiques. Then one day, three years ago, this couple came into Cross Creek for lunch. They looked at our menu logo and said "Look, it's Ruby!" My manager said, my boss loves old trucks and wants to get one someday and they said well Ruby is for sale! I was so excited! My husband, John, and I went to see Ruby and I fell in love.
Homeward: Tell me a little about Ruby.
Chris: Ruby is a 1954 Chevy. She's been refurbished which is still a work in progress. She's a bit of a diva. If you talk real nice to her she will probably start right up but she doesn't like cold, rain, or extreme heat! Ha! But I love driving her, she gets a lot of attention!
Homeward: She sure did get my attention! Do you have any holiday specials on your menu right now?
Chris: Our lunch special is a Cranberry Turkey Panini served with chips and bacon ranch dip. Our dessert specials are pumpkin cream cheese pie, Kahlua pecan pie, pumpkin cookies as well as our usual daily desserts. We also have our Ida Mae custom decorated cookies. Allie (Ida Mae is her grandma and she wanted to name the cookies in memory of her) is very creative and can make just about anything!
