Description
This historical home was built for the local entrepreneur Joe Lee Allen and his family. Mr. Allen thought of it as a monument to his success as a businessman. A blend of Queen Anne, Neoclassical, and Gothic elements, the house drew attention for its architectural design upon its completion in 1906. Several postcards of the house from the early twentieth century were produced. In its 117-year history, the home has had only 4 owners. In recent decades, it has received significant media attention and has been featured on five national television shows and was the setting for a 2016 feature film. Several books have chapters featuring the house; it is the model for the house in the 1966 novel The Scent of Lilacs; and it is the sole subject of a bestselling nonfiction book published in 2012.
